Weekend at the Pool

After running all morning Saturday Kady invites us to spend the weekend at this house she is watching for a co-worker with a beautiful pool and hot-tub. My body was on the verge of disowning me so I thought a couple of days of vegging out in the sun would be very therapeutic and relaxing. Of course it's Saturday and Kady gets a pool party going with a bunch of friends-FUN! Jake made brats and corn on the barbecue, we sat in the hot tub, and played pool volley ball. I still have a huge problem getting into the water all the time, and can't really understand why it takes me 10 minutes to jump into a pool when everyone's waiting to play a game. But I thank all for being patient:)

On sunday we got to REALLY enjoy summer at the pool. Jake, Kady, Murphy and I spent all day tanning, swimming, and relaxing. We had beautiful weather, great food and wonderful friends, what else can we ask for right?
With our sore muscles and joints it was exactly what we needed.

My 1st Half Marathon

I can't hardly believe it, but I am very proud to announce that I just ran 13.1 miles for the first time on Saturday. Kady and I finished in 2hrs and 44 minutes. We both ran it together and only walked through the water stops. I felt great the first 9 miles until my knees, legs, pelvis, abs, and feet started hurting. For practice we had only done one long run (8miles) two weeks before the race, but I thought I would be just fine considering I was doing plenty short runs (4-6miles) all summer. But I tell you those last 3 miles were a piece of work. I was begging my legs to please come through for me and pick themselves up off the ground even though they had no strength left what so ever. At the finish line I started crying unstoppably for some reason. I never expected I would become so emotionally overwhelmed. I was just so happy to have finished and so extremely proud of myself to have set a goal and completed it. Also I was so thankful to Kady who ran with me the whole time cheering us on. And of course I couldn't have done it without Jake who was also there with the camera along the way taking pictures and cheering all morning.

Ode to Nursing

One of my nurse girl friends sent me this, it's really true, I love it.
Patients aren't always satisfied with how well nurses communicate,a recent Medicare survey revealed. Well, nurses had no trouble communicating with me after I defended them.Nurses from recovery rooms, coronary care, pediatrics, geriatrics, ER and Trauma Units emailed me across the country. Here's what they had to say:

Come walk in our shoes for a 12-hour shift. Come see the joy, the tragedy, the comedy, the 100 ways we are pulled and pushed, then rate my "pleasant greeting", "answers call light in a timely fashion, "states name of patient".Use the bathroom now, because you might not get the chance again until your shift ends. Wear comfortable shoes. Don't worry if they're clean. They'll end up with blood or vomit on them.

We are the patent's advocate, the doctors' eyes and ears, and every one's scapegoat. We can page your doctor but we can't make that doctor magically appear. We check your stitches, wipe your blood, drain your pus and empty your bedpan. Nursing is a tough job, but we're tougher. We've been yelled at by administrators, supervisors and doctors. We've been kicked, slapped, punched, spat on, and sexually harassed by patients in various states of delirium, mental illness, arrogance and intoxication. We've even had chairs and food trays thrown at us.

We work mandatory overtime, weekends and holidays. We eat Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner with coworkers. We deal with families who ignore visiting hours, bring food to patients on restricted diets and insist on staying the night even though it's not a private room.

We deal with the Florida son who orders us around to show a patient whom he's neglected for years, that he cares. We cannot be at your side every walking minute. We have 10 other patients. We cannot answer 5 call lights at once. We can't stop doing CPR on a patient because you ran out of tissues.

We are not maids, beauticians or cocktail waitresses. We are professionals with college degrees. We hate that we can't spend more bedside time with you. Swearing at us will not make us move faster. Taking better care of your health would help. Quit smoking. Lose weight. Start exercising. Stop drinking.

How do we survive? We ignore the nasty comments, the demanding relatives, the crazy staffing grids. We count to 10 before speaking. We pray every morning for strength and wisdom, patients and empathy. We drive home tired and frustrated, telling ourselves over and over, "I'm not the nurse I want to be, but I'm the best nurse the hospital staffing allows me to be".We fall asleep praying for the ones who won't survive the night. There is no finish line, ever. Nursing is demanding, fulfilling and we can't imagine doing anything else. Nothing beats washing blood and glass off a car crash survivor, stabilizing a broken neck, saving a diabetics leg, keeping a cancer patient in remission.

The day we send a patient home we relish the unbelievable resilience of the human body and spirit. We did not become nurses for the hours, the salary or the glamour of it all. We became nurses to make a difference. We don't ask for much. One sincere "Thank You" makes it all worth it.

Long time no see.

For some strange reason I haven't had the time or made the time to blog lately. I keep saying I have nothing really to blog about, but that's not completely true becuase since last time my livingroom, hallway, and bathroom has been re-painted, I started seriously training for my half-marathon relay, and all those other everyday things that just happen like waching garage band practices and scoring new bowling records.

I recently discovered my video camera on my regular camra actually doesn't suck so I have been taking more footage than pictures. Truly not sure if that's a good idea or not since pictures are way more timeless and who's gonna wach someone's old videos anyways? But for now I guess I'll share them with all y'all since you're stuck reading my blog :)

It's Anniversary time!

... no, no, not our anniversary. Mark & Sandy's (Jake's uncle and aunt) 25th. I know, I know Jake and I are always acting as if it were OUR anniversary, hence we cellebrate it on the 16th of every month. I keep telling him we can only do that for the first year, after that we gotta wait a whole year.. yikes!

Anyways... we had a good time at the big 25 year bash that Aaron and Samantha (Mark & Sandy's 2 kids) organized. Good job guys, it was a hit.

I was talking to Mark and I said: "Wow, Mark 25 years... tell me would you do it all again?"

"....um, yeah but without the kids!" he says with a twinkle in his eye. I think that was a joke because if it wasn't for them there would be no party to tribute their long and lasting marriage.

Then I asked Sandy the same question, "...um yeah, I definately think so", she answered. I love how they both answered the question with the same tone of answer. (I did ask them seperately).
So again congrats to Mark and Sandy, may there be many more years of happiness comming your way, hopefully the best is yet to come.

DJ Jake is BACK!!

Wooohoooo, Jake finally set up his Turntable contraption in the basement after beeing in retirement for almost a year. Here's some sneek-peeks:

Post Suberbowl Party

As always party isn't over just because the game ends. We keep it going with nothing other than American Idol and karaoke our way through the night.

Baby Harrison want's to play too!

Play that Guitarr Peter!

Stop... .and smell the roses Amanda.

Superbowl 2009

Here it is again, our Christmas. This is the time to get together with friends and family and celebrate with good food and football. For me it means we are over the winter hump and spring is just around the corner. At least it felt like it all weekend, I had all the windows open on Saturday while cleaning the house to get rid of the winter stank-oh so nice!

As for football I had no idea what teams made it to the Superbowl. I thought it was Arizona Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Stranglers, but Jake informed me they are called the Steelers (whatev).

Jake got the big turkey fryer out and made like 90 wings, very delicious.

I don't know who's gonna win the football field guacamole, the chubby team or the skinny team :)
Nothing like putting our guests to work in the kitchen, but Derek won't do anything without goofing around, thanks for the laughter's lemon man!
Isz goood? Hanging with cuz at the pre-party. "Grody Gross" as Dawn so beautifully puts it. Those are chicken wing tips.

Big Holla for the Ladies.

Let's make Sushi

I have been on a Sushi crave for a while now, and finally I tell Jake that I think we can make our own. Mainly because that way I can eat "as much as I want". I guess I always feel like every time we go out to the sushi bar it's like $11.50 for a spicy-tuna roll or $3.50 for a salmon nigiri by the piece, and before soon the bill is $50 not to mention the Sake. That's not very frugal in my recession-time mind.

So I venture out to Byerly's and buy some sashimi grade tuna (my favorite), wasabi powder, sushi-rice, pickled ginger, dried sea-weed, sushi mats, chopsticks, and all other fixin's for like $48.76. I do have to include that they had a 'buy one lbs get one free' deal on the tuna.

Jake steals the show of course. Even though he has never attempted making sushi before, he completely takes the lead showing me how to make my roll as if he's the su-chef of the sushi chef on a daily basis. In his defense I'm weak for men taking the lead in cooking matters so I was admiring his every move, and yet again pinching my arm in disbelief that I'm with a man who is making me sushi.

Quick question for the readers.

Since I bought 2lbs of tuna I put half of it raw in the freezer, is it ok to pull out and make more sushi, or should I just grill/sear it into Ahi Tuna since it's not 'fresh' anymore?

Cross Country Skiing

We try our best to get out in the freezing cold even in the dead of winter. Our friends Kevin and Dawn always come to the rescue when all we wanna do is stay in and be couch potatoes. Dawn has been talking about x-skiing for months now and we finally made a date to go on Sunday afternoon after the meeting.
Jake was so cute. Everyone who knows him is very well aware that he is very good at most sports, but this one not so much. I could tell he was getting frustrated as he kept slipping and sliding on those long skis. It probably didn't help that I kept telling him how adorable he was and that I just wanted to eat him up. I stopped after getting the feeling he might poke me in the butt with the pole. After about 15 minutes we both got the hang of it better and started feeling the groove. Every so often someone really fast would pass us looking really professional and Jake meant to call them a "hurtbulle" in Swedish which is a word for someone really energetic and athletic, but instead he said "kottbulle" which means meatball. I laughed so hard. Can't blame a guy for trying.

We have to admit we felt amazing after doing about 6km of skiing and I we went to bed at 9pm and slept like logs.

Kevin & Dawn

Thanks again guys for a great afternoon, but next time lets not go to Don Pablo's for lunch before going skiing:)

Killers Concert

This last Monday we rocked all out at the Killers concert at the Northrop Auditorium. I have to say it's been a while since I was at such a cool show. Derek&Amanda, Kevin&Dawn and cousin Aaron joined us for dinner at Jake's (the actual restaurant) first then we headed downtown for the music. I even wore comfortable shoes this time since I knew I had to work early the next morning and didn't wanna risk going with huge blood blisters.
I LOVE the Killers, they are so rockin'!

Plus, there is nothing better than to go see rock concerts at places where the Russian Ballet comes to dance the next day.

Here are some sweet Killers songs:
